THOMAS H. KAPSALIS

Thomas Kapsalis was born in Chicago in 1925. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and eventually became an associate professor of drawing and painting. Kapsalis taught at the Art Institute of Chicago from the mid 1950s for fifty years, 1/3 of the prestigious Institute's lifespan. He is without a doubt one of the most influential teachers in its history.

From 1953-1954, Kapsalis traveled to Germany on a Fullbright grant where he studied with Willi Baumeister. Baumeister's approach to art had a deep impact on Kapsalis' work.

Kapsalis has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, PA and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. His Paintings have become brighter and more colorful every year, where as in the 60's he opposed the Vietnam War and decided to use no colors and muted tones in his opposition.

Retired now for over ten years Kapsalis continues to paint everyday evolving his work but still following closely his strong ties to cubism. Hi goal has always been to deny what the eye tells us and strive forward with the language.
