LAURA MARSHALL

Laura Marshall is an artist that fuses abstract expressionism with clear hyper-realism. She utilizes multiple styles adding several elements to complete a singular and coherent vision. Marshall's work is deep and though-provoking conjuring ideals of equality forcing us to never forget the disparity and oppression that still exists on our evolving planet.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"I primarily work in acrylic on wood and canvas, as well as windows or other often discarded materials. My work is rooted in my dedication to social justice and the message that's been shared directly from oppressed, marginalized, and subjugated groups over centuries. Our race issues, our wealth issues, and our economic issues are still the same as they ever were, having been guised in different packaging as our culture and society have continued to morph and change. As a professional artist, I seek to be at the center of the conversation around collective liberation and to create portraits that stir the viewer into thinking about their own potential biases, blind-spots, and cultural tendencies. As a society, we're too often afraid to talk about race and discrimination, especially as it relates to ourselves for fear of offending those around us. I agree with those who say that our silence on the subject is much more offensive than making a mistake. In mistakes, we grow. In silence, we stagnate. Now more than ever, we need to have that open conversation, with everyone involved across all sectors. I see myself as another voice in the conversation and hope others will join me through engaging with my work."
